Waste Disposal and Recycling

City of Prospect encourages recycling, composting, and sustainable consumption. Diverting and avoiding waste is the best option to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and demand on natural resources.

Our residents are provided with a kerbside waste and collection service through East Waste, who are at the forefront of environmentally responsible waste management.

The local community also plays a vital role, by utilising the waste, recycling, and organic services correctly, we can all minimise the amount of waste that goes to landfill.

City of Prospect’s three bin waste collection service includes:

  • A 240-litre bin with a yellow lid for recyclables, collected fortnightly
  • A 240-litre bin with a lime green lid for food organics and garden organics (FOGO), collected fortnightly
  • A 140-litre bin with a red lid for waste to landfill, collected weekly

In additional to the three-bin system, Council supplies every resident with a Kitchen Organics Basket and an annual supply of 150 compostable (corn starch) bin liners for the collection of food scraps - dispose of these in the green FOGO bin.

City of Prospect is currently running a Weekly FOGO Trail in which participating households have switched their bin collections:

  • FOGO (green lid) bin will be collected weekly
  • General Waste (red lid) bin will change to a fortnightly collection

Did you know?

  • Just one recycling or FOGO bin containing unsuitable materials can be enough to contaminate an entire truck load.
  • Using the correct bins will save Council money and take pressure off your rates.
  • Sending waste to landfill is expensive and charged by weight, with a levy of $140 per tonne in metro Adelaide. It costs 60% more to send materials to landfill than recycling them through the yellow bin and 85% than composting material through the green bin.
