Building and Fences

As most property owners are aware, a building requires ongoing maintenance to ensure it remains fit for purpose and safe to live in. As buildings age, structural weaknesses can develop, and failures may occur.

While responsibility for maintenance of buildings rests with the property owner, Council has the authority under the Development Act 1993 to issue emergency orders in the event that a building is demonstrated to be unsafe. Emergency orders may require the undertaking of urgent works to make the building safe and/or requiring that people evacuate the building until it is made safe. In some cases, the demolition of the building will be required, especially if it poses a threat to public safety.

Concerns about potentially unsafe buildings can be reported to the Development Services Team via admin@prospect.sa.gov.au.
